I will be eternally grateful to you for how you healed by back!

I started training with Coach Berry when I was 61 years old.  For four months, I had suffered a great deal of back pain and knew I need to do something different. When I began with Coach, he asked me how I was feeling.  After a lifetime of training with a number of different trainers I could only say I didn't feel great.  My back pain caused me to see chiropractors and accupuncturists, but I found no relief.  After one deep tissue massage, Coach immediately had me feeling better.  After two months of training Coach had me back to 100%.  He knows what he is doing when it comes to training and injuries.  He trains people to perform exercises correctly to avoid injuries.  I have worked with many different trainers all over the San Diego County and Coach Berry is the best, most effective trainer I have meet.  I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to improve their health and fitness levels.

Ron, age 62

The Butterfly-Shaped Gland

What you need to know about thyroid cancer.

As if fears of breast, lung, or prostate cancer aren’t enough, add thyroid to the list. While still somewhat rare, rates of thyroid cancer are increasing. A small gland in your neck located below the Adam’s apple, the thyroid is shaped like a butterfly. Its job is to produce hormones that control how your body uses energy. This includes regulating bodily functions such as blood pressure, weight, body temperature, and heart rate. When abnormal cells start to grow in your thyroid, you develop thyroid cancer. Thankfully, this is a type of cancer that is usually detected early enough for successful treatment.
What should you know about thyroid cancer and are you at risk?

Swelling Symptoms

How will you know if you have thyroid cancer? During the earliest stages, you’ll probably not notice any symptoms. But as the disease progresses, you’ll probably have a lump or swollen area in your neck that you can feel. Often, your doctor is the first to detect a lump during a routine exam. The area may be painful and the pain may extend to your ears, and you may have difficulty swallowing or breathing. On top of this, you may develop a wheezing when you breathe or a cough that’s unrelated to a cold. And when you talk, your voice may sound hoarse.

Cancerous Causes

No one knows why thyroid cancer occurs. For some reason, the DNA in thyroid changes, as it does in other types of cancers. The new cells grow, multiply, and lose their ability to die. A tumor forms and without proper treatment, the cells can spread to nearby tissue and throughout the body.

You may be at a higher risk for developing thyroid cancer if you’ve been exposed to high levels of radiation in the past—especially if the exposure was during your childhood. This may be from radiation treatment to the neck or head or even exposure from nuclear power plant accidents or testing of weapons. Occasional dental X-rays do not affect your risk of thyroid cancer.

Other risk factors include certain rare genetic syndromes or history of goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland).

Targeted Treatment

There are several different types of thyroid cancer. What type you’re diagnosed with, your age, and the stage of the cancer will determine what type of treatment you undergo, as well as your prognosis. Any time you notice any of the symptoms described above, seek medical attention immediately. In the event your doctor detects a lump, blood tests, an ultrasound, and a biopsy will be performed. If the results reveal cancer, surgery will be performed to remove all or part of the thyroid. Your doctor may also remove the surrounding lymph nodes in the neck in case the cancer has spread.

Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are rarely needed to treat thyroid cancer.

Rather, radioactive iodine in pill form or liquid is often given following surgery to kill any thyroid tissue or cancer cells that remain after surgery. This therapy may cause nausea, dry eyes, dry mouth, a change in taste or smell, or pain where the cancer cells remain. During treatment, you may need to avoid close contact with children or pregnant women.

Should your thyroid gland be removed, you’ll need to take a thyroid hormone medication the rest of your life. This capsule will supply the hormones once produced by your thyroid and helps to regulate the communication between your pituitary gland and your missing thyroid.

Even after treatment, thyroid cancer can return. It can again be successfully treated, but your doctor will recommend periodic blood tests and scans to monitor recurrence.

Powerful Prevention

Since the cause of thyroid cancer is unknown, there’s really no way to prevent it from happening. If you know you’ve inherited a gene mutation that increases your risk, you may choose to have your thyroid gland removed. Those who work in or live near a nuclear power plant may be able to keep a medication called potassium iodide on hand to take in case of a nuclear accident to prevent thyroid cancer.

So while you cannot prevent thyroid cancer definitively, you can take steps in the right direction. One of the best? As with all other diseases, take care of your body by eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise.
