Fuel Up with the Right Foods

Eat these foods for lasting energy.

Feeling sluggish, fatigued, or dragged out? There's a good chance it's because you're eating the wrong kinds of food. Food is what provides your body with energy, but some foods do a better job than others. How important is food? Consider refueling a car, and your body is the car. Do you feel like you're running on fumes or like you're filled up with cheap-grade gas that leaves your engine sputtering and barely gets you to your destination? Eating the right foods is compared to filling up on premium, high-octane gas. You're revved up and ready to go from the time you wake until the end of the day.
Give these 10 high-octane foods a try and see if you can feel your engine running better than ever.

1: Oatmeal

Complex carbohydrate foods high in fiber are your best bet for lasting energy, because they're absorbed slowly, keep you feeling full, help you maintain a stable blood sugar level, and provide energy as opposed to just eating simple carbs (white pasta, white rice, and white bread) that give a quick burst of energy but soon leaves you feeling depleted, tired, and moody.

Oatmeal is both high in fiber and a whole-grain complex carbohydrate, giving you the best of both worlds. For breakfast tomorrow, try a bowl of oatmeal sprinkled with raisins and see if you feel more energized.

2. Eggs

Protein is needed to help regulate the energy your body receives from fats and carbohydrates. When you're on a diet that limits the amount of fat and carbohydrates you can consume, protein steps in to provide energy. Eggs may be one of the best sources of protein you can find because your body is able to absorb 97 percent of the protein they offer. So whether you prefer your egg cooked, fried, boiled, or scrambled, try one today.

3. Nuts

All nuts, but particularly almonds, hazelnuts, and cashews, are high in protein, healthy fats, and magnesium—a mineral that helps your body convert sugar into energy. Without enough magnesium in your diet, you're likely to feel zapped of energy.

Fat may have a bad reputation in the dieting world, but there are good types and bad. “Good” fats like the monounsaturated fat, which is found in nuts, provide energy and protect your heart from disease. Keep a stash of nuts handy for a quick, easy snack.

4. Tea or Coffee

A cup of morning Joe may be just what you need to boost your energy level. The caffeine found in coffee and tea improves mental focus, increases your metabolism, and improves your performance. It’s no wonder coffee is the world's most popular way of waking up. Rather than one big cup in the morning, try several smaller servings throughout the day as you feel the need. Since caffeine may prevent you from a good night's rest, you may want to stop drinking tea and coffee by the late afternoon.

5. Apples

Fruits are simple carbohydrates that give you quick energy. They're also high in fiber, which prolongs the energy boost, and apples contain water to keep you from becoming dehydrated, a common cause for fatigue. Apples are one of the many fruits you can enjoy for a pick-me-up snack. Add some cheese or peanut butter to your apple slices for an even more nutritious and delicious energy boost.
