Is It an Intruder?

Get some peace of mind with a home security system.

You’re out of town on vacation. Your family is sound asleep in their beds. You’re a single mom.

Or maybe your neighborhood has experienced a recent outbreak of crime. These are all valid reasons to consider getting a home security system.

Each system offers different options. Some may offer free installation but pricey monthly monitoring and lengthy contracts. Others have options that allow you to monitor your home on your cell phone.

Do you really need a security system, and if so how do you know what type of system to choose or what monitoring company to go with? Don’t let a pushy salesman convince you to purchase unnecessary options. Know the facts to make the best decision for the safety of your family.

Secure Options

A basic home security system is connected to a central control panel. If a door or window is opened while the system is armed, it sets off an alarm and/or notifies your monitoring company, who then contacts the local police or fire department. More elaborate systems include fire and carbon monoxide alarms, detectors for broken glass, motion sensors, interior or exterior lighting controls, or remote home temperature control.

Most systems require professional installation, but there are many do-it-yourself kits to purchase. Some systems are quite pricey, while others are more affordable. DIY systems may cost anywhere from 10 to several hundred dollars. Top-of-the-line systems may run you several thousand dollars plus the monitoring, which usually ranges from $20 to $50 a month.

Is It for You?

Many people rush into buying a security system. Maybe their neighbors got burglarized or they’ve been watching too many TV crime shows and now have trouble sleeping at night. If you’re unsure about having a system installed or don’t have the extra money each month to pay for its monitoring, there are other avenues to take for home security.

Cheaper options include putting extra deadbolts on doors, installing motion sensor lights around your property, posting “Beware of Dog” signs in your yard, attaching timers to your lights when you’re away from home, putting your mail and newspapers on hold while your out of town, and locking your doors and windows when you’re away or asleep.

Many people find an alarm system an annoying thing to deal with. It can be a nuisance turning it on and off when you come and go. Kids, guests, or pets may accidentally trigger the alarm, and you may get fined by the monitoring company for false alarms. And just like your cable contract, you may have trouble paying the monthly monitoring, but you’re required to do so by contract.

Of course, if it will give you peace of mind, help you sleep better at night, and protect you in a dangerous situation, a security system is the way to go. The safety of your family is worth every penny, as is your peace of mind. A discount on your homeowner’s insurance is a possible benefit as well, so you may be able to offset a portion of your monthly payment.

How to Choose

Research hasn’t shown a significant relationship between the cost and the quality of a security system, so don’t be afraid to shop around and compare prices and options. Get several quotes that include installation and monthly monitoring costs. Research reviews, check with the Better Business Bureau, ask friends for recommendations, and ask the company for references.

Before signing a contract, read all the fine print. You’re trying to simplify your life with a security system—not make it more complicated, so make an educated decision before signing that monthly monitoring contract.
