Living Up to the Claims

Juice cleanses promise great benefits. Can you trust their claims?

Juice for breakfast, juice for lunch, and juice for dinner. You know fruits and vegetables are good for you, but for every meal, days or weeks at a time? While such a diet sounds boring, difficult, and like a lot of work, it promises to help you lose weight, detoxify your body, prevent disease, clear your skin, and boost your immune system. Could the benefits outweigh the negatives?

Before buying a juicer—which will cost you $50 to $400, expensive juice mixes, or more fresh produce than you can handle, educate yourself on the pros and cons of a juice cleanse.

I also eat fruit instead of drinking juices. That's something I've read up on. I think that if you drink a lot of fruit juice you take in way too much sugar. You'd be better off eating a bunch of strawberries or apples - Kris Humphries, professional basketball player

The Juice Cons

While many benefits come with a juice cleanse, unfortunately they don't fully live up to their claims. Here's what you need to know about the downsides of juice cleanses.

Your body needs protein and healthy fats for building new tissue, normal body functions, processing certain vitamins, and healthy skin and hair, but you won't find these in juice. This is why juice cleanses aren't recommended for more than four days. Bottom line: a juice cleanse is far from a balanced diet.

Fruit is high in natural sugars. This may not mean much when you snack on one orange, but it can quickly add up considering it takes five oranges to make a glass of juice.

A lack of the right nutrition may cause side effects such as dizziness, headaches, fatigue, blood sugar spikes, nausea, and irritability. Individuals who are pregnant, undergoing chemotherapy, living with diabetes, or suffering kidney disease should not attempt a juice cleanse for these reasons.

While you'll lose a little weight from a juice cleanse, it'll mostly be water weight that's likely to return as soon as you stop the cleanse. A low-calorie diet can lead to loss of muscle mass and mess with your metabolism, two things that'll make it harder to keep weight off in the future. All this to say, juice cleanses aren't an effective method for lasting weight loss.

Juice cleanses claim to detoxify your body, which is supposed to help you lose weight, boost your energy level, relieve constipation, and take away headaches. However, your kidneys, liver, and intestines do this naturally every day without the help of juice.

The Juice Pros

Don't write off juice cleanses just yet. They may come with a long list of cons, but there's a lot of good to them as well. Here are a few of their main benefits.

Fruits and vegetables are nutritional powerhouses. High in vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, you'll feel like you're doing something good for your body. A juice cleanse will make it easy to reach the recommended number of servings each day of fruits and vegetables and you may prefer the taste of pureed versus raw produce. A juice cleanse might even force you to like foods you formerly didn't care for.

After focusing solely on fruits and vegetables and strictly avoiding processed foods, added sugar, and unhealthy fats, when you stop the diet you may have a new appreciation for healthy foods and won't want to go back to your former diet habits. Finishing a juice cleanse may give you a sense of accomplishment and make you feel healthy and alive. Through a juice cleanse, emotional eaters who normally turn to unhealthy comfort foods may learn healthier methods of dealing with stress, depression, anxiety, or boredom.
