When - Not If

Be prepared with the right types of insurances.

It’s one of those things you hate paying for…until you actually need it. Insurance is just that: insurance. It insures you and your family are taken care of during unplanned life events.

With the right kind of insurance, you’re essentially protected from financial ruin. After all, you never plan for a car accident, a cancer diagnosis, or a house fire. But they happen, and you need to be prepared.

Don’t get scammed into buying insurance you don’t need. There are countless types of insurances available, but only these seven are necessary.

1. Health Insurance

Everyone gets sick at some point in life. Healthcare costs are expensive and are only increasing. This makes premiums so high many people can’t afford health insurance, but it is vitally important your family is on some type of health insurance plan. With so many options available, the risk and cost of not having health insurance far outweighs the monthly payment.

2. Homeowners/Renters Insurance

Protect your most valuable material possession—your home—from flood, fire, burglary, or natural disaster with homeowners or renters insurance. If something unforeseen happens to your home, insurance will pay to repair or replace your lost or stolen items. Look for insurance that covers the structure, your possessions, and temporary housing. Don’t own your home? Renters insurance is inexpensive and worth every penny.

3. Automobile Insurance

Never drive without car insurance. In many countries, all vehicles on the road must be insured, as car accidents happen in the blink of an eye and affect more than the person responsible for the accident. Damage to your vehicle, the other vehicle, your liability in court, and medical payments can all be covered by auto insurance. Premiums vary between providers and the types of coverage required vary depending on your local government’s laws.

4. Life Insurance

If you were to die today, would your spouse and kids be able to survive without your income or the valuable services you provide in the home? Even stay-at-home mothers should have life insurance. Think about how you would pay for childcare if the mother were to pass. Everyone who has a spouse or dependents needs life insurance worth 8 to 10 times their yearly income.

But be careful! When shopping for life insurance, you’ll need to make sure you choose wisely (just as with other insurances), as the various options are very different with regards to cost and coverage.

Whenever you have another baby, get a raise, or buy a house, you ought to reevaluate your life insurance policy and increase it if necessary.

5. Disability Insurance

If you were disabled and unable to earn money to provide for your family, how would you pay your bills? Disability insurance makes sure you and your family are taken care of in the event of an injury or illness. Short-term (up to six months) and long-term disability insurances are available, but long-term is the most important. If you’re smart with your money, you should have an emergency savings to cover a short-term injury that takes you from the workforce.

6. Long-Term Care Insurance

Nursing home costs are astronomical, causing each person in a nursing home to shell out approximately $50,000 a year. Adults near the age of 60 should purchase insurance to cover the possibility of long-term care, as health insurance will not pay for this type of expense. Only the very poor qualify for government assistance. The longer you wait to purchase long-term care insurance, the more expensive it becomes.

7. Identity Theft Insurance

Increasingly common, when someone steals your identity, it can cost thousands of dollars to get it back. Be smart and protect yourself against identity theft. Find an insurance provider that covers the expenses of restoring your identity and take comfort knowing your identity is yours and yours alone.
