Treat depression naturally with these seven proven methods.

You're blue, sad, and moody. You lack motivation and just feel like staying in bed all day. The things that used to bring you joy don't anymore. Sound familiar? You could be depressed. While you may feel alone and hopeless, you're not. Researchers estimate as many as nine percent of adults have suffered from some sort of depression in the past year.

There are different types of depression and therefore different treatments, but before resorting to medication that comes with negative side effects you may want to give natural remedies a try. Changing your way of thinking, your behaviors, and your lifestyle can have a tremendous effect on your mood and mental state.

Here are seven effective natural treatments for depression.

Exercise Your Emotions

You may not feel like getting out of bed, but physical activity is exactly what you need. Force yourself to go for a walk, a run, or a hike in the woods, because exercise triggers your brain to release chemicals called endorphins that improve your mood. In addition, a good workout will make you feel better about yourself, improve your overall health, and help you lose weight, all which lessen feelings of depression.

Get Outside

It's a curious fact that more people are depressed during the winter than any other time of year. Known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, this form of depression is closely linked to a lack of light and therefore a vitamin D deficiency. The winter months see fewer hours of sunlight and the cool temperatures keep people indoors. Remedy? Sit under a therapeutic light box or go outside and soak up some warm sun for a few minutes each day.

Set Goals

Feeling a lack of purpose and motivation? Set achievable goals to work towards. For you this may mean getting dressed for the day, cleaning your kitchen, calling a friend, or going for a walk. As you feel stronger set new goals and take on new responsibilities that challenge you. Staying busy with meaningful tasks will fight feelings of depression and help you see the purpose in everyday tasks.

Talk about It

Talking is one of the best natural treatments for depression. Holding your feelings inside, trying to fix things alone, and allowing negative thought patterns to concrete themselves in your mind can all lead to depression. So talk with a trained psychologist or a trusted friend who can help you learn to recognize triggers and thought patterns associated with feelings of sadness and then commit yourself to learning new ways of thinking and responding.

Be Thankful

When the hard times are getting you down, refocus your mind away from your sadness and hone in on what is good in your life. Keep a journal, write a list, or just sit and think about all the things you have to be thankful for: a roof over your head, food to eat, healthy kids, blue sky, a pet, a job, and the list goes on. When you notice feelings of depression creeping in, fight them with thankfulness.

Keep a Routine

There are certainly perks to going with the flow, but maintaining a routine in your daily life is also beneficial. Sleeping, waking, and eating on a regular schedule are known to prevent and ease depression. Too much or too little sleep can make you depressed as can eating the wrong kinds of foods, skipping meals, or overeating.

Eat Healthy

Antidepressant medication works to increase the amount of serotonin in your brain, but did you know there are foods that do the same thing? Healthy fats such as coconut oil, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines), protein and tryptophan (turkey), and folic acid (avocado and spinach) all work to improve your outlook on life. So eat well and cheer up!
