Skip the Gym, Not Your Workout

Creative ways to get your exercise without working out.

Sometimes, you just don’t feel like working out. Maybe it’s been a long week and you don’t feel like going to the gym or perhaps you’re tired of your same old workout. When these days come, don’t give in. Just take the opportunity to try something new.

Though you don’t want to make it a habit to skip your regular routine, it’s okay to give yourself a break from the weights, treadmill, or Yoga studio and stay active with one of these forms of exercise. When you’re done, you should feel refreshed and ready to get back in the gym with your trainer.

#1: Dancing

As if you needed another reason to bust a move, dancing is a great way to get your exercise and burn calories. Whether an impromptu dance party in your family room, dancing at a club, or taking dance lessons, you can burn up to 250 calories in only a half hour. Choose from hip-hop, ballroom, tango, Zumba, country, or ballet. Just pick something and get moving!

#2: Swimming

When the kids are playing in the pool, why not join them? Swim laps, tread water, do water aerobics, or play games. Do this, and you can burn serious calories while having fun and staying cool at the same time. As an added perk, the buoyancy of water makes swimming one of the best exercises for people with painful joints.

#3: Riding Bikes

Many people get their regular exercise riding bikes because it doesn’t feel like a workout. Around your neighborhood, on your commute to work, or on community trails, riding bikes is a great way to burn calories and stay in shape. Just remember to wear a helmet. And even though it’s easy to get back on after a long time away, don’t push it too far if you’ve not ridden in a while.

#4: Playing Video Games

Instead of sitting on the couch staring at a screen, why not play some active video games? Sports or dance games are popular to play alone or even better, when competing with family or friends. You may be surprised to learn that playing a boxing game for half an hour can burn more than 200 calories!

#5: Gardening

Enjoy spending time working in the yard? Gardening is a great way to get exercise. Raking leaves, pulling weeds, mowing the lawn, digging, and hoeing provide a cardio and strength training workout. On top of burning calories, you get the satisfaction of watching your lawn transform before your very eyes.

#6: Cleaning

It may not be your favorite thing to do, but cleaning house is one way to get a bit of exercise. Make it more enjoyable by turning up your favorite music and seeing how fast you can get it done. After you burn some calories vacuuming, scrubbing, and dusting, you may be energized enough to get back in the gym right away.

#7: Yard Games

Remember the days of playing outside until dark with your friends? Adults can have fun with yard games, too. A game of kick-ball, ultimate Frisbee, capture the flag, or tag with the kids will get your heart rate pumping. Need more ideas? Jump on the trampoline, throw the football, or shoot hoops.

#8: Roller Skating

Who cares if it’s your nephew’s birthday party? You can still have fun at the skating rink. Skating laps with skates or roller blades is a great way to get some exercise. Just be careful. You may not have the same sense of balance you had 10 years ago, so start out slowly.
