Clean and Green

Three reasons to make your own cleaning products and tips to get started.

The expensive cleaning products you have in your cabinets are filled with chemicals—some safe and some not so safe. With these products, you wash the dish you eat off of, clean the clothes that touch your body, and scrub your home. Store-bought cleaning products make it easy to get rid of stains, soap scum, and odors, but you may be surprised to learn how simple it is to make your own cleaning products that work just as well.

Why spend your time and effort making homemade cleaning agents, and if you decide to give it a try, where do you start? Keep reading to find out.

Save Your Health

One reason many people make their own cleaning products is to keep potentially dangerous chemicals out of their home. An increasing number of studies reveal potentially dangerous health effects caused by the chemicals found in everyday cleaning products. That’s because whatever chemicals you touch enter your bloodstream through your skin and the fumes you breathe fill your lungs. Could you be doing more harm than good when you clean your home? Possibly. Compounding the problem is the fact that cleaning chemicals aren’t regulated, so it’s up to you as the consumer to decide their safety.

Whether they are known carcinogens, asthma triggers, hormone disrupters, skin irritants, endocrine disrupters, or fatal if swallowed, there are a few volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to keep out of your home no matter what. These include sodium borate, glycol ethers, ammonia, fragrance, formaldehyde, ingredients that start with “quat,” bleach, sodium laureth sulfates, perchloroethylene, antibacterials, and artificial colors.

Save You Money

If you like saving money, you’ll be excited to learn that it’s cheaper to make your own cleaning agents. With just a few ingredients, you can make enough products to last months. All it takes is a little planning and a few extra minutes to combine the ingredients. Just hop online, research the cleaning product you’re wanting to make yourself, and follow a simple recipe.

Save the Environment

The products you use to clean your home enter the air or go down your drain to enter the water system. While water treatment plants do what they can to remove contaminants, they’re unable to remove 100 percent of them. The harmful chemicals then enter rivers, lakes, and oceans, where they build up over time. These chemicals that are toxic to you are also toxic to the environment. Sea life, plants, and animals are all affected.

But there is another way that making your own cleaning products protects the Earth. Store-bought cleaning products typically come in plastic packaging. While recyclable, the majority of the world’s plastic ends up in landfills where it doesn’t biodegrade. Do your part and keep those plastics out of your home altogether.

Getting Started

A few basic ingredients can make most of the cleaning products you need to save your health, your money, and the environment. If possible, buy ingredients in bulk quantities to save time and money in the future.

One of the most common ingredients is white vinegar. Its acidity makes it a natural and effective way to clean and disinfect. Other non-toxic ingredients to stock up on include baking soda, liquid castile soap, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, salt, and essential oils for a fresh scent. Before you go shopping for ingredients, look online for simple cleaning product recipes.

Other cleaning supplies you should have on hand include a bucket, cleaning cloths, scrub brushes, mop, and spray bottles. As you make your solutions, clearly label each container so you can tell them apart.
