Acupuncture: A Poking Solution

Could this ancient Chinese medicine relieve your pain?

It sounds awful: tiny needles inserted through your skin at specific points on your body. But if you’ve ever experienced it, acupuncture is a far cry from painful. Most commonly used to treat pain, acupuncture originated over 2,000 years ago and is a key element of traditional Chinese medicine.

How does acupuncture work? Could it be the remedy for your pain? Does it have other uses? Are there risks involved? These are a few of the most common questions regarding acupuncture. And you’re about to get the answers.

Acupuncture is based on the belief that the body is filled with pathways called meridians. And that energy, called chi (pronounced “chee”), flows along these pathways. According to this theory, illness, pain, or health problems happen when your chi is blocked or unbalanced. Through acupuncture, chi is unblocked and allowed to freely flow again.

An acupuncturist will give you a physical examination and ask questions about your health. He or she will then locate certain points on your body that relate to your specific health condition. To restore chi’s natural balance, 5 to 20 hair-thin needles are quickly tapped into the skin at these points—some deeper than others. Sometimes pressure, heat, or electrical current is used in addition to the needles, depending on what the acupuncturist believes will help restore chi. Treatment usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes while you lie still. Multiple visits may be needed.

You may feel pressure from the needles, but no pain should be felt during insertion or removal. Following treatment, the sight may feel numb, tingle, itch, or be slightly sore. This feeling is said to be the restoration of chi.

Uses for Acupuncture

Acupuncture is performed to control a number of painful conditions, including the following:

  • curb nausea and reduce vomiting following surgery and chemotherapy
  • fibromyalgia pain
  • stroke rehabilitation
  • headaches and migraines
  • back pain
  • labor pain
  • dental pain
  • menstrual cramps
  • osteoarthritis
  • tennis elbow
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • asthma
  • eczema
  • drug addiction
  • myofascial pain

On top of these conditions, a number of other issues can possibly be addressed through regular acupuncture treatments. Recent studies suggest acupuncture may also be helpful for weight loss, overcoming depression, boosting fertility, and even kicking smoking to the curb.

Many people are skeptical about the perks of acupuncture, but if you’re having trouble finding relief from pain, acupuncture may be worth trying. Though you may consider this type of medicine to be quackery, it has undergone significant scientific testing and has been found to be highly effective for many conditions. Following appropriate treatment sessions, many people feel pain relief and leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. And in many cases, acupuncture may work best when used in conjunction with traditional medical care.

Unfortunately, not everyone will experience relief from their symptoms after undergoing acupuncture. If you don’t feel improvement after a few weeks of treatment, you may need to seek other remedies for your pain.

Science Behind It

Modern medicine isn’t exactly sure how acupuncture relieves pain. Acupuncture points may be areas to stimulate muscles, nerves, and connective tissues. When these areas are stimulated, the body’s natural painkillers are released and blood flow is regulated.

Studies have shown that simulated acupuncture may work the same as the real thing. In addition, those who believe acupuncture will help their condition seem to have the best results.

When acupuncture is performed by an experienced, certified acupuncturist, the risk for complications is low. Possible side effects include soreness, bruising, organ injury (rare), or infections (often caused by non-sterile needles).
Though extremely safe, do not undergo acupuncture if you have a bleeding disorder, are taking blood thinner medication, have a pacemaker, or if you’re pregnant. These conditions increase your chance of complications.
