Good Hair Days Are Here to Stay

Tricks of the trade for hair you'll love.

Does it seem like some days your hair has a mind of its own and nothing you do seems to help? If you let it, feeling self-conscious about the appearance of your hair can put a damper on your day, even if everything else goes your way. Some people have more bad hair days than good, while others' hair seems to look perfect every day. Do they know something you don't?

Whether a bad hair day for you means not enough volume, lack of shine, or frizziness, try these tips for great-looking hair every day of the week.

Wash It

Clean hair is beautiful hair, but don't shampoo your hair more than necessary. Unless your hair is excessively oily, washing your hair every two to three days is perfectly fine. Shampooing too often strips away your hairs' natural oils, dries it out, and fades color-treated hair.
Also, it pays to spend a little extra for quality shampoo and conditioner that are

formulated for your specific hair type (dry, oily, lacks volume, colored, or laden with product). So don’t be afraid to splurge on your shampoo.

Dry It

The way you dry your hair will depend on its texture and thickness. One rule of thumb is to let your hair mostly air-dry, and then finish with a blow dryer. Blow-drying wet hair until it's mostly dry then letting it air-dry the rest of the way will leave your hair frizzed out. Another common mistake is to blow-dry super wet hair until it's completely dry, leaving hair parched and flat. Curly hair is best left to air dry completely or if necessary, touch up damp hair with a blow-dryer that has a diffuser attachment.

Interested in blowing your hair regularly? Invest in a quality dryer that has both warm and cool settings. Hot air works best to style hair and cool air sets the style in place.

Style It

Limit the amount you brush your hair and never brush wet hair, as this causes your hair to break and fray. Rather, when your hair is wet, use a wide-tooth comb. Only when absolutely necessary should you break out a brush for dry hair, and then, make sure it’s a high-quality one. And while mama swore buy it, don't buy into the myth that 100 brushes a day adds shine. Over-brushing only leads to hair breakage and split ends.

Use products sparingly or your hair will look limp, stiff, or greasy. Prior to curling your hair use a mousse. Before straightening your hair, use a balm or protective spray to protect your hair from the heat. Without protection, regular heat exposure will quickly cause your hair to split and appear fried and lifeless. Heat-styled hair may benefit from a weekly deep-conditioning treatment to restore shine and moisture.

Trim It

A secret to keeping your hair looking fresh and healthy is to get regular trims. Seeing your hairdresser every six weeks to three months is a good rule of thumb, but it's also important that you go to a reputable hairdresser you can trust. Prices for haircuts vary but feeling good about your haircut is worth spending a few extra dollars.

Color It

Over-processed hair often appears dry, damaged, and dull. The chemicals used in bleaching, perms, highlights, and coloring all weaken your hair's inner bonds, making hair more susceptible to breakage and stripping away its natural shine. When the grays start multiplying, you're ready for change, or you can't remember your hair's natural color, it's okay to dye your hair, but the less often the better.

Know It

Some days you just know it's going to be a bad hair day. Maybe it's the weather or you didn't have time to wash it the night before. On days like this, it's helpful to have a backup style. Instead of your regular do or loading on product to make your hair cooperate, try something different. A braid, a pretty barrette, a cute headband, or a French twist are simple ways to style your hair in a rush.
