Medication and the World Wide Web

What you should know about buying medications online.

The Internet is changing the way people shop. You can compare prices and buy just about anything you want without ever leaving your house, whether you’re looking for clothes, groceries, cars, and even medications. That’s right—medications.

In fact, many pharmacies now offer apps that allow you to refill a prescription with the touch of a button on your smartphone. What could be easier than refilling your prescription while sitting on your couch? No more long lines at the pharmacy or the headache of making another stop on your long list of errands.

But beware! Purchasing medications online may be a faster, easier, and often cheaper way to get your prescriptions, but there is risk involved. There are countless counterfeit websites and counterfeit drugs found on the Internet. Ordering from an unknown source will put your bank account at risk, as well as your health.

Ordering meds online is a viable option. You just have to be careful. Here’s what you need to know.

Buyer Beware!

Steer clear of drugstore websites that you’ve never heard of. These sites may send you medication, but the drugs you receive may be fake, expired, contain too little or too much of an active ingredient, be made with toxic ingredients, cause dangerous interactions with your current medications, not be made using safe standards, or be a completely different medication than what you ordered for your specific condition. Out of breath? It is a big scary. But take a deep breath and keep reading.

Big red flag: Never order medications from a website that doesn’t require a doctor’s prescription or that tries to diagnose your condition and prescribe medication for you. This is illegal and dangerous. Only trust your doctor to prescribe medications.

Additionally, you’ll want a site that protects your privacy. Pharmacy websites prey on innocent people to steal their identity or their money. Counterfeit drugs are a profitable business and criminals are waiting for people to give their personal information. Never give your credit card number, social security number, or personal health information to an unknown source. Avoid sites that don’t list a physical street address and contact phone number.

Know Your Source

The good news is that it’s not difficult to find a trusted name in the pharmacy world online. Nearly all major drugstores now have an online presence. Find a site that is state licensed, is in good standing, and you’re familiar with.

But be on the lookout! There are plenty of counterfeit sites selling prescriptions that work hard to appear similar to big-name websites. Look for a seal showing the site is approved by the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sties (VIPPS). These sites are licensed and have been inspected by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

It’s also important that the site you use has a licensed, registered pharmacist on-call to talk with you and answer any questions you may have.

Compare Prices

A benefit of shopping online is the ability to compare prices between different stores. A deal may sound great online, but your local drugstore may be just as cheap or cheaper. If an online price is substantially less than your local store, it’s probably a good idea to question its legitimacy.

You may be tempted to buy medications, vitamins, and supplements in bulk in an attempt to save money. But take note! All of these have an expiration date, so before you buy them, make sure you’ll be able to use them before they expire.

Report Scams

If you’ve been taken by an online pharmacy, don’t keep it to yourself. Alert the authorities to protect others and bring the wrongdoers to light. Last year in America alone, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration closed down more than 4,000 online pharmacies selling either fake or unsafe medications.
