The No-Regret Boat

What you can do to love your boat.

For many, this is exactly what a boat becomes: a waste of money. But it doesn’t have to be that way, does it? Of course not. If you take the right steps, you can have a boat and enjoy it, too. Here’s how.

Buy Wisely

The first mistake many boat-buyers make it to buy more boat than they need. Like most things in life, you can spend as much money as you want on a boat. But do you really need all those fancy gadgets? Think about why you’re getting the boat and buy accordingly.

Whether you’re getting it for fishing, skiing, or just to get on the water, your purchase should reflect that. The size of your boat also matters, as you’ll either have to have an automobile built to tow watercraft or pay to dock your vessel when not in use. Either way, getting the right boat and the proper-sized boat will prevent you from spending more money along the way than you want.

Keep It Maintained

If you’re going to get a boat, you can’t let it sit around half the year and expect it to be ready to go when the weather warms up. You’re going to have to get it winterized and then ready for the new season each and every year. Otherwise, it’s going to become the money pit you fear.

While you can do a lot to keep your boat in good working order on your own, it’s a good idea to have a pro give it the thumbs up before hitting the water each new season. This way, any large or small problems can be diagnosed and corrected while you’re still on dry land. This peace of mind may not seem like a big deal, but when you’re stranded on the water, you’ll wish you’d had your boat inspected.

Use It

One of the biggest reasons people regret owning a boat is the fact that they rarely use it. Don’t become a boat owner who never uses his or her vessel. Instead, get it on the water as often as possible. But do it wisely. If you have a family, leaving them behind so you can indulge your fishing habit isn’t a great idea. Instead, encourage them to join you.

In the event your family members don’t enjoy fishing, get them on the boat in other ways. Unless you have a big, slow pontoon boat, you can likely pull a raft behind your boat. Toss your kids on the raft and have them hang on tight for fun they won’t forget!

Remember Safety

Fun as a boat is, one accident can ruin everything. With that in mind, it’s important to keep safety at the forefront of all your boating adventures.

To maintain safety, you’ll need to learn what the various buoys in the water mean and steer your boat accordingly. Additionally, you should learn how to steer your vessel when faced with a large wake from other boats. Otherwise, you may wind up with a dangerous amount of water in your boat. And keep an air horn, fire extinguisher, and flare gun onboard in case of an emergency.

Finally, you should realize that the most important piece of equipment for your boat is a life vest for each person on the boat. Younger passengers should wear a life vest at all times, as should adults who do not swim well. Doing this will take the edge off if you face an emergency situation while on the water.
