Is the Medifast Diet Right for You?

What you need to know about this diet program.

You're on the verge of being obese or are there already but you don't want to undergo weight-loss surgery. You're willing to spend some money on a weight-loss program and have the motivation to make lasting lifestyle changes to reach your goals. If this describes you, then the Medifast diet may be a good fit. It's been around for more than 30 years and thousands have had success. Could you be the next success story?

Read on to learn what's required, how much it costs, the results it promises, and if there are health risks involved.

How It Works

If you're one of those people who don't like to spend time in the kitchen preparing healthy home-cooked meals, this diet plan may work well for you. The Medifast diet requires you to eat Medifast Meals that you purchase from their company. These meals and snacks claim to be nutritionally balanced; low in fat, carbohydrates, and calories; and come in correct portion size. The meal packets must be mixed with water and then heated in the microwave or cooled in the refrigerator. An impressive list of 70 different foods are available to order and include things like soup, chili, stew, shakes, oatmeal, pancakes, eggs, puddings, cheese puffs, and drinks.

To get started, you’ll fill out a questionnaire to determine which of their diet plans is best tailored to your specific needs. The most popular is the 5 & 1 Plan on which you eat six times a day. On the 4 & 2 & 1 Plan you eat four Medifast Meals, two of your own meals, and one snack a day. The 5 & 2 & 2 Plan is more flexible and includes five Medifast Meals, two of your own meals, and two snacks every day.

When you've reached your weight-loss goal, the Medifast diet lets you gradually increase calories over a period of six weeks. To keep the weight off indefinitely, you're supposed to continue on a 3 & 3 Maintenance Plan (three Medifast Meals and three normal meals).

Cost Involved

While the replacement meals are cheaper than eating out, they're not cheap. The four-week starter kit will run you about $400, a four-week 140-serving package is $375, a two-week 76-serving package is $217, or you can purchase foods individually. As you purchase foods you earn rewards towards your next purchase.

For many people, the cost is worth the convenience of not grocery shopping and not cooking and the hope of shaving off extra pounds.

The Promises

Studies have shown people on the Medifast diet can expect to lose two to five pounds per week for the first two weeks, and then one to two pounds each following week. Your weight loss will depend on your starting weight, the amount you exercise, medical conditions, medications, and adherence to the diet.

Cons to Consider

Do your research and get a doctor's approval before beginning any new diet program. There are unpleasant, negative side effects associated with the Medifast diet and include fatigue, dizziness, headaches, hair loss, leg cramps, rashes, gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, bad breath, and menstrual changes (for women). The diet is not safe for pregnant women, people with type 1 diabetes, or individuals who've had a stroke or heart attack, or suffer from kidney or liver disease.

You may also find the diet difficult for another reason. On the 5 & 1 Plan, dairy products, fruit, starches, and other foods and beverages (including alcohol) are off limits. While on such a calorie-restrictive diet, intense exercise isn't recommended. Since keeping pounds off requires exercise, you may struggle with long-term weight loss if you don't stick with the diet changes or continue purchasing meals.
