Out with the Old, In with the New

Looking for a new workout? Give one of these a try

Most likely, you’re a creature of habit, doing the same workout routine each week. It’s what you’ve always done and something you know how to do. But doing the same workout week after week can get boring. It can also slow you down from reaching your fitness goals. Slow down long enough, and you’ll stop your progress altogether.

When you’re ready to try something new, look no further than these six must-try workouts to add to your routine.

An Online Class

Miss the days of group exercise? Your gym may not be offering group fitness classes these days, but that doesn’t mean you have to exercise alone or without an instructor. More than likely, you can continue working out with your trainer online. Want some additional ways to burn calories from the comfort of your home? A stationary from Peloton allows you to participate in streaming spin classes. Not big into biking? Pick up the Mirror. Hang the Mirror on your wall and join in with the instructor leading a workout class. Before you know it, you’ll feel like you’re part of the action. Prefer to save your cash for your personal trainer and organic foods? No problem. You can find a million free videos online to work out with. Just run it by your trainer to make sure the source is reputable.


An increasing number of people have taken their workouts outside this past year. Being out in nature is a great way to get exercise, boost mental health, and soak up some vitamin D. Why not try hiking to get an effective, fun, and free workout? The longer the hike and the more hills, the more challenging your workout will be. Add geocaching or birdwatching to your hike to make it more interesting.

Cycle Mount Everest

While climbing Mount Everest is something most people will never attempt, it’s something you can now try virtually. Known as “Everesting,” this extreme cycling challenge is not for the faint of heart. Cycling enthusiasts must climb mountains and hills and log their ascents to reach their goal of 8,848 meters, the elevation of Mount Everest.


If you don’t have the equipment, skills, or location to climb rock faces out in nature, you can still get an excellent climbing experience at a climbing gym. Now popping up all over the world, climbing gyms are a fun way to get a full-body workout and burn serious calories. Choose from beginner, intermediate, and advanced climbing walls, learn a few rules and skills from a trained instructor, get harnessed up, and start climbing.

Water Aerobics

As the weather warms up, head to a pool or the beach for your daily workout. Water workouts are ideal for people with weak or painful joints. The buoyancy of the water offers a no-impact workout and the resistance of the water provides an effective way to add strength training to your routine. Water aerobics can be done by yourself or in a class with an instructor. If you’re not into aerobics, swim laps instead.

Yoga Outdoors

Tired of your yoga class being indoors? Why not take it outside? Ask your yoga studio if they offer any outdoor classes. Being in nature in a peaceful, quiet setting can improve your ability to breathe deeply, relax, and stay aware of your surroundings. Practicing yoga on an uneven surface like the grass or sand will challenge you in new ways and strengthen different muscles.
