Need a Car? No Problem.

What you can do to have confidence when buying your next automobile.

Second to your home, your vehicle is likely the most valuable possession you own. What kind of car to buy is a big decision.

You want something reliable, but you don’t want to break the bank.

Can you get financing with your credit? How much of a monthly payment can you afford? What kind of car can you and your spouse agree on? What options would you like to have?

With so many questions to consider, purchasing a new or used car can be a confusing and stressful time. Before you head to the dealership, get advice on how to choose the best car at the right price.

What Kind?

The first step in buying a car is deciding what kind of car you want to look for. Things to consider when narrowing down your choices might include the following:

  • number of seats
  • cargo space
  • gas mileage
  • towing capacity
  • safety ratings
  • reliability ratings

Maybe you have kids and need extra space. Perhaps you need a truck or SUV to tow your boat. Or maybe you have a long commute and would like a car that’s great on gas. Whatever your needs, figure them out beforehand and don’t waver when looking for a new ride.

How Much?

What can you afford? Do you plan to lease or buy? If you’re planning to buy the smart way and have saved up money for a car, how much do you have to spend? Or if you’re okay with a monthly payment and need a loan to finance your car, how much can your budget allow each month? It’s easy to get in over your head. But be careful. Don’t be a “monthly payment” type of buyer.

When you only care about how much you pay each month, you will get ripped off. Your eyes are often bigger than your wallet. It would feel pretty good driving a new, fancy car until you could no longer afford the payments. Seriously consider the consequences of a high monthly payment before signing the title.

For a little help determining what you can handle, use a load calculator to help you determine the monthly payment you can afford based on your down payment, trade-in value, interest rate, and car price.

After you’ve decided what type of car would fit the needs of your family and what you can afford, it’s time to narrow your results by comparing cars. Read reviews, research reliability and safety features, and find the cars you prefer. Narrow your results down to a few makes and models.

You can often get the best deals on cars during the month of December (when dealerships want to reach year-end goals) and from July through October (when dealerships want to make space on their lots for new models). So if you can hold off until these months to buy, do it!

Shop Around

Rather than shopping at a dealership, it makes more sense to shop online. You don’t need to let a car salesmen influence your decision. Be in control of your shopping experience. Look at dealer websites or the multiple sites that list new and used cars for sale in your area. When it’s time to buy, you’ll be equipped to negotiate.

When you think you’ve found the perfect car, first check its true market value price. This will let you know whether it’s a good deal or not. If the car you found was at a dealership, check reviews and ratings for the dealer. You don’t want to do business with shady salesmen.

Additionally, look for dealerships offering rebates or low-interest rates to help save you money. Just beware when a price looks too good to be true. You may be led to think you’re getting a steal of a deal, but you’ll get ripped off in the end. The car price may be low, but the dealer may add hidden fees, offer a lower price for your trade-in, or give you a loan with a high APR.

The next time you’re in the market for a new or used car, do your homework and shop with confidence.
