Common-sense tips to plan an uncommonly memorable family vacation.

The kids are out of school, the weather is warming up, and it’s time for a vacation. Time to get away, time to relax, and time for fun!

But what are your summer vacation plans? If you need a little help planning a vacation that you’ll look back on with fond memories, take heart. With a little simple planning, you can help avoid potential headaches and bask in the glory of your fabulous vacation.

When you’re ready to gear up for a vacation you won’t forget, remember these suggestions.

Do Your Research

Sit down and start brainstorming your dreams for this summer’s vacation. Figure out what your ideal vacation looks like. What type of destination do you have in mind? If you prefer the mountains, beach, a small town getaway, or big city sights, plan accordingly.

You’ll also need to consider whether you want to visit amusement parks, museums, historical landmarks, or outlet malls, and choose a location with access to your preference. Depending on your choices, you may be looking at something nearby or you may have to fly overseas. Not interested in what’s nearby, but don’t want to fly far away? Then you’ll have to re-evaluate.

Depending on how much time you have to plan and how difficult it is to find the perfect place, you can spend an hour researching for your vacation or six months. Thankfully, you can do much of your research at home, courtesy of the Internet. In the event you prefer to get your hands on something tangible while researching, you can visit your local library and browse books about places you’ve never been. Or talk to friends and family for recommendations on their favorite vacation spot.

Set a Budget

Whether you’re on a tight budget and are looking for cheap vacation options or your budget allows for elaborate options, you can find a vacation that fits your bank account. A great way to fund a vacation is to set aside money from each paycheck all year long. That way, you won’t wind up paying for your vacation and then some by paying for it on credit card.

As you consider the costs of your vacation, don’t forget to account for your transportation (flight, car rental, cost of gas), meals (all inclusive, four-star restaurants, or fast food), lodging (tent, hotel, or cabin), activities, entertainment, and other random but typical expenses (souvenirs, parking, boarding your pet).

Vacations can add up fast. Don’t get caught off guard by unexpected fees and taxes. Be sure to budget for some unanticipated costs.

Plan It Out

For a vacation to go as smoothly as possible, it’s helpful to plan ahead. Once you’ve decided on your destination, it’s time to line up lodging and transportation. The next step is to decide on what activities you plan to do.

Buying tickets online ahead of time will probably save you money and save you time. Don’t buy online and you may find out that the one thing you wanted to attend is sold out. Online shopping is also great, as you can often find coupons or discounts online that aren’t available elsewhere.

As you make reservations for an airline, hotel, car, or entertainment, be sure to print the confirmation page that shows the final price. A week before your trip, call to confirm your reservations. You don’t want unwanted surprises along the way.

Pack Your Stuff

You’ve been counting down the days and your departure is finally around the corner. A few days before take off start planning what to pack. Research what type of weather to expect at your destination so you know what type of clothes to take. Then make a list of everything each person needs to pack. If you’re flying, find out limits on baggage size and weight, as well as regulations on what you’re allowed to take in your carry-on baggage. You don’t want to get to the airport and have to repack.

Load Up and Go

Finally, the day you’ve been waiting for has arrived, and you’re on your way. Stay safe and remember to relax and have fun. That’s what vacation is all about!
