Health and Fitness News
I will be eternally grateful to you for how you healed by back!

I started training with Coach Berry when I was 61 years old.  For four months, I had suffered a great deal of back pain and knew I need to do something different. When I began with Coach, he asked me how I was feeling.  After a lifetime of training with a number of different trainers I could only say I didn't feel great.  My back pain caused me to see chiropractors and accupuncturists, but I found no relief.  After one deep tissue massage, Coach immediately had me feeling better.  After two months of training Coach had me back to 100%.  He knows what he is doing when it comes to training and injuries.  He trains people to perform exercises correctly to avoid injuries.  I have worked with many different trainers all over the San Diego County and Coach Berry is the best, most effective trainer I have meet.  I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to improve their health and fitness levels.

What About Gout?

Learn more about this type of painful arthritis.

In the middle of the night, what seems like a nightmare is actually real life. You wake to find your big toe burning hot, swollen, and painfully tender.

You're unable to sleep due to the intense pain that continues for hours and eventually subsides. When morning comes you wish it was all a nightmare, but what you really experienced was an attack of gout. Now you're nervous to sleep, worrying you'll wake again to the same nightmare.

Gout is a type of arthritis that strikes suddenly, leaving you exhausted from the pain. Untreated, it can strike again without warning.

Form of Attack

Unlike typical arthritis symptoms that progress gradually, most gout attacks come out of nowhere, usually in the night, and affect joints like your big toes, ankles, feet, elbows, wrists, hands, or knees. The joint may be painful, tender, swollen, red, and warm to the touch. This nightmare may last as few as four hours and as many as 12, but discomfort in the joint may linger for days or even weeks. As the joint heals it may itch and peel. Attacks progressively become more painful, debilitating, and prolonged.

Some people who suffer with chronic gout easily mistake their conditions for other types of arthritis.

Origin of Attack

Purines are substances naturally found in your body and in certain foods. As your body digests purines, uric acid is produced. Normally, uric acid passes through your kidneys and out of your body in urine, but some people produce too much uric acid or their kidneys don't flush enough out. This leads to high levels of uric acid circulating in your blood and the formation of urate crystals. Over a period of years, these hard crystals build up in your joints and cause inflammation and the pain of a gout attack.

Risks for Attack

Too much uric acid in your blood can be caused by several factors. First, eating a lot of meat, seafood, alcoholic beverages, and drinks high in fructose increase production of uric acid. Second, the kidneys have a harder time excreting uric acid when you're obese. Third, health conditions such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, kidney disease, and heart disease increase your risk of gout. Fourth, people who take low-dose aspirin, diuretics, or certain medications used to treat high blood pressure are more at risk, as are people who've recently lost weight quickly, undergone surgery, or experienced another form of bodily trauma

Men are also much likelier to suffer from gout than women, because their bodies naturally have higher levels of uric acid. If your parents suffer from gout, you may be upset to learn the condition seems to be genetic. If either of your parents suffered from this type of arthritis, you're likely to suffer as well.

Counterattack Methods

Following diagnosis of gout, medication is used to treat, prevent, and reduce risk of future complications. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroid drugs, and colchicine pain relievers are the three main types of medications used to treat gout. Other drugs that reduce the production of uric acid or increase its removal from your body are used in patients with frequent, painful attacks.

Lifestyle changes are your second line of defense, and these are just as important as the proper medication. Typical lifestyle modifications include avoiding the foods and drinks listed above, increasing your intake of water, and losing weight through diet and exercise. You may also want to drink more coffee, eat more cherries, and take a vitamin C supplement, all shown to decrease the amount of uric acid in your body.

Left untreated, gout can permanently damage your cartilage, joint tissue, and even bone. So take the pain seriously and get it treated as soon as possible for the best possible outcome.
