  • Beware the Bloodsuckers
A hike in the woods, camping in the mountains, or hunting in tall grass are prime opportunities for tiny creatures to hitchhike on your shoe, crawl up your leg, and find a nice spot to feast on your blood. Most tick bites are relatively harmless. Some ticks, however, carry diseases like Lyme disease that they transfer to their host. Read >>

Not So Pretty After All

Are these ingredients putting your health at risk?

You pay a lot of attention to what you put in your body, but what about the products you put on your body? Tough as it may be, your skin isn't impenetrable, and the chemicals found in your cosmetics, lotions, toothpaste, and shampoo are absorbed through your skin and enter your blood stream.

More than 10,000 chemicals are used in personal care products. Looking at the ingredient labels on products (if they're listed), you likely can't pronounce half of them. Can you trust these unknown ingredients to be safe for your health? Unlike the ingredients found in your food, chemicals found in beauty products may be unregulated. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration leaves the safety of cosmetics up to the manufacturing company, banning only a handful of chemicals while the European Union has banned more than one thousand.

It's impossible to avoid every dangerous chemical, but you can do your part by buying certified organic products. The decision is yours, but here are a few of the chemicals deemed by many to be unsafe.

Danger 1: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) / Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

Found in the majority of personal care products, SLS and SLES provide the lather and foam in your shampoos, soaps, and toothpastes. Over-exposure to these chemicals can cause skin, eye, and lung irritation. While not responsible for causing cancer on their own, when combined with other chemicals, these chemicals can become carcinogenic.

Danger 2: Toluene

A chemical solvent called toluene is used in hair dye and nail polish to make it stick and increase glossiness. Known to be toxic, toluene is known to cause developmental, reproductive, immune system, liver, and kidney damage. Toluene may be listed as phenylmethane, methylbenzene, benzene, or toluol.

Danger 3: Parabens

Parabens do the good work of preventing bacteria and mold from growing in your makeup, shampoo, soap, and deodorant, but they also do harm by mimicking estrogen. Studies have associated parabens (and other big words with “paraben” in them) with female fertility problems and breast cancer.

Danger 4: Triclosan

Used in hand soaps, deodorants, and toothpastes to kill bacteria, triclosan and triclocarban are known endocrine disrupters, which means they mess with your reproductive and thyroid hormones. The overuse of antimicrobial chemicals such as triclosan and triclocarban may also contribute to the problem of antibiotic resistance.

Danger 5: Phthalates

Phthalates are mainly used in plastic products but are also likely found in your perfume, nail polish, deodorant, lotion, and hair spray. These chemicals have been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, low testosterone in men, early puberty in girls, and birth defects. Since phthalates add fragrance to beauty products, you can avoid them by using unscented options.

Danger 6: Formaldehyde

Known to cause cancer and banned by the European Union, formaldehyde is still found in nearly one fifth of cosmetic products in the United States. Used as a preservative and disinfectant, this chemical may be lurking in your soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, deodorant, makeup, and nail polish. Besides cancer, formaldehyde is also linked to allergic skin reactions and damage to the immune system.

You may not see formaldehyde listed in the ingredients but it may be found in other ingredients or formed from the breakdown of other ingredients such as imidazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, methylene glycol, and diazolidinyl urea.

Danger 7: Talc

Did you apply eye shadow or blush this morning? Your makeup likely contains talc, a known carcinogen linked with ovarian cancer. Also found in deodorants, soap, and baby powder, talc gives products their hint of sparkle and helps absorb moisture.
