Health and Fitness News
I hated smelly gyms, exercising and getting all sweaty. OMG! Dare to Be Fit change all that for me!

Julie46

Hi, I am Juile age 46.  I never like working out, getting all sweaty and I don't like gyms.  But since I became a member of Dare to Be Fit, all that has changed.  I am no longer on blood pressure medication.  I look and feel more energic and trim.  People are comlimenting me all the time on how much I have changed.  I smile a lot more because I feel so good.  Coach discovered the 'gym rat' in me and I am proud to say that I am in the best shape ever at 46 years old.  If you are serious about exercise and healthy choices, then Coach, Ray and Ty will lead you every step of the way.  Dare to Be Fit is like my very own personal training club.

Thanks for keeping me smiling!

Julie

Field Day: It’s Not Just for School

Wish you knew your neighbors? Kids bored? Plan a neighborhood field day!

If your kids are begging for something fun to do (as most kids do), why not suggest a neighborhood field day? Kids love games. Kids love competition. And kids love friends. With a neighborhood field day, you can combine all three. Kids old enough to do so can plan it with their friends and have fun in the process.

Since putting on a neighborhood field day can be a big task, you may want to divide up the responsibilities between families. One can be in charge of snacks, another secures prizes, and a third determines the games. You can keep it simple or make it as elaborate as you want. Whether your field day consists of 5 kids or 20, half an hour or all day, it could become a neighborhood tradition and a memory your kids will keep forever.

From the invitations to the games to the prizes and snacks, here are some tips to make your field day a success.

Set the Date

Check your calendar and consult a few other parents to decide on a date that works for everyone. Saturday mornings usually work best. Give yourself at least a week or two to make the plans.

A field day requires a large, flat grassy space. Good options are a neighbor’s yard or a nearby park. Once the date and location has been decided, have the kids make simple invitations that include the time, location, and a reminder to wear play clothes. Older kids can walk door to door around your neighborhood, handing out the invitations.

Fun and Games

The type of games you play will depend on the number and age of kids you expect to participate. You may need to plan some activities for young ones and some for the older kids, as you don’t want the younger kids getting run over!
A few great game ideas that work for any and all ages include the following:

  • tug of war
  • hula-hoop competition
  • three-legged race
  • sack race
  • water balloon toss
  • balancing an egg on a spoon race
  • 50-yard dash
  • other relay races
  • water balloon or water gun fights

Once you know what the day will consist of, make a list of all the supplies you’ll need for each activity and start gathering them all in a central location so they’re ready for the big day. You should be able to find most of the supplies you’ll need lying around your house or a neighbor’s house. If not, you may need to purchase a few things.

Before the scheduled day arrives, enlist a parent or teenager to oversee the activities on the big day. A whistle will probably come in handy, so have one ready.

Prizes

Have a parent or two in charge of prizes. At the close of the field day, have an awards ceremony. This could be first, second, and third place ribbons or little toys for winners. Or if you’d rather, let all participants be winners and give everyone a prize for participation.

Snacks

Fun and games create a healthy appetite. Put a parent or two in charge of snacks and drinks. Set up a table for some simple kid-friendly snacks such as trail mix, popsicles, or fruit, and take a snack break after a few activities.
Drinks are also important. Instead of soda or fruit juice, have water or lemonade on hand to keep kids hydrated.
