Listen to Your Body

Think it’s okay to skip your workouts? Your body disagrees.

You don’t need to lose much weight and your heart’s in good shape as far as you can tell. It’s been a while since you broke a sweat, and you’d like to keep it that way. Your body wants something completely different. And if you’re willing to listen, you can hear what it has to say, loud and clear.
What’s the big deal about exercise? You may feel healthy enough without it, but your body knows something is missing. Here are seven ways your body will tell you it’s time to get some face time with your trainer.

You Can’t Sleep

Have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep through the night? Take it as a wake up call to exercise. Being active kicks your body systems into gear, including your internal body clock that controls sleep cycles. Regular exercise is one way to get your circadian rhythm back on track. Exercise also tires your body, preparing it for a good night’s rest. People who work out during the day tend to sleep longer and deeper.

You’re Sick Again

Do you seem to catch every virus that goes around? It’s because your immune system is weak, and a lack of exercise is a contributing factor. Physical activity strengthens your muscles and your immune system as well. What’s the connection? Increased blood flow means increased circulation of immune cells. Exercise also stimulates circulation of antibodies, white blood cells, T cells, and natural killer cells. All of these are major players in the fight against illness. And working out once a week won’t do much good. It’s got to be most days of the week. So get in there and stop the sickness.

You’re Backed Up

If you’re moving slowly, don’t be surprised if your digestive tract does the same. When your bathroom habits slow down, exercise may help speed things up. Increased circulation stimulates your intestines to do their job of moving waste through the body.

You Feel Depressed

Studies show exercise is a highly effective way of treating depression. If you’re feeling blue, irritable, or angry, you may not feel like working out. Fight against the desire to lay around doing nothing. Because a bit of time in the gym can do a world of good for your mental health. Exercise increases production of brain chemicals responsible for boosting your mood.

You Struggle to Breathe

When climbing the stairs or carrying in the groceries leaves you feeling short of breath, your body is screaming for exercise. Labored breathing is a common sign you’re out of shape. Exercise is what you need to strengthen your heart and lungs so simple everyday activities become easier.

You Hurt

Back aches or stiff joints may make you feel like sitting around. However, what you likely need is some time in the gym. Yes, your body may be getting older, but a lack of regular exercise will contribute to aches and pains. In fact, one of the leading causes of low back pain is skimping on exercise. Just be careful. All exercises are not created equal. If you have a condition that causes joint pain, avoid workouts that place pressure on your joints. Instead, focus on low-impact and flexibility exercises to relieve joint stiffness, loosen tense muscles, and strengthen muscle to relieve pain.

You’re Stressed Out

Your mind’s racing, your muscles are tense, and you’re anxious all the time. Take these as signs that you need to work out. Exercise is one of the best ways to manage stress and relieve the physical symptoms it causes, from headaches and neck pain to digestive problems, tightness in your chest and jaw pain. Instead of lying on the couch all evening after a stressful day, take a jog or head to the gym.
