Smart Snacks for Your Sweet Tooth

Craving something sweet and diet-friendly

Many people associate diets and weight loss with restrictions and forbidden foods. No carbs, no desserts, no sodas, no fun. Because of these restrictions, some of your favorite foods are likely on the list of foods to avoid. It’s a common diet mistake, however, to forbid the foods you crave most. These restrictions cause you to feel desperate. Suddenly, all you can think about is that one food that’s off limits. Weakness takes over and you can’t help yourself. So you overindulge.

Smart dieting doesn’t cause these problems. It allows for occasional enjoyment of the foods you love best. This is particularly helpful if you have a strong sweet tooth. Want even better news? There are quite a few sweet foods that are good for you as well as low in calories. That’s right! You don’t have to break your diet to enjoy certain sweets. If this sounds like sweet music to your ears, keep reading to find out what sweets you can enjoy in moderation without ruining your diet efforts.

Dark Chocolate

There’s no reason to feel guilty about eating dark chocolate. With more cacao and less sugar than its sweeter cousin, milk chocolate, dark chocolate is a smart choice for chocolate-lovers. Filled with powerful antioxidants and minerals, dark chocolate tastes great and reduces your risk of heart disease by lowering your cholesterol and blood pressure levels. The compounds found in dark chocolate are also known to reduce unwanted inflammation, improve cognitive function, and reduce insulin resistance. For added health benefits, go for dark chocolate with almonds.

Greek Yogurt Parfait

Pair Greek yogurt with a little granola, a dab of honey, and bites of fruit for a sweet and satisfying snack. Greek yogurt is a great source of protein and calcium. However, not just any yogurt will do. Many varieties are exceptionally high in added sugar, so be picky about what brand you buy. By including fruit, you add fiber, vitamins, and minerals in a delicious package!

Frozen Grapes

Wash and dry a bunch of grapes and keep them in a container in the freezer for a simple, sweet snack you can grab anytime. Whether green, red, or black, grapes are especially rich in vitamins C and K. Additionally, they’re full of antioxidants. These work to prevent diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Eat up and leave the guilt at the door.

Chocolate Protein Smoothie

The right smoothie ingredients make for a sweet and healthy snack or meal. Add protein powder to power up for a workout or to help you get through the afternoon. All you have to do is combine chocolate protein powder, spinach, strawberries, banana, and chia seeds. Mix them up and you’ll have an energizing smoothie that’ll satisfy any sweet tooth.

Sweet Popcorn

It’s high in fiber, low in calories (when prepared the right way), and rich in antioxidants. In other words, popcorn is a delicious, healthy snack option. Just skip the movie-theater popcorn. It can cost you hundreds of calories and thousands of milligrams of sodium. While most popcorn is topped with salt and butter, there are healthy ways to add some sweetness. First, air pop some popcorn. Instead of topping with salt and butter, add a few dark chocolate chips and toss in some almonds. Then let your sweet tooth enjoy!

Rice Cakes with Fruit

Rice cakes aren’t that nutritious or flavorful, but they are crunchy and low in calories. Top a whole-grain, brown rice cake with ricotta cheese and fruit preserves for a delicious, sweet treat. Add fresh berries for added sweetness and nutrients. The fat and protein in the ricotta paired with the fiber in the fruit makes for a filling, satisfying snack.
