I am Tara Caden and you would think that after having four, yes, four lovely children that my body would not come back to it's former youthful form.  It is just unbelievable what Coach Berry and the Dare to Be Fit fitness experts can do for you.  Motivation is a huge part of keeping on track to your goal and these guys really can keep you focused.   It is not all work, but a whole lot of fun as the Studio feels like your personal hang out with all your friends.

Supplementing with the Fishes

The benefits of taking a fish oil supplement.

Despite sounding gross, fish oil is one of the most commonly taken supplements on the market. How popular is it? More people take a fish oil supplement than a multivitamin, probiotic, vitamin C, or calcium supplement.

If you’re like most people, you likely wonder what the big deal is about fish oil. Answer: Omega-3 fatty acids. The two main omega-3 fatty acids include docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Both DHA and EPA provide powerful health benefits, and fatty fish are rich in them.

Unfortunately, your body doesn’t produce any omega-3s on its own. That means you’ve got to get them from food or supplements. What’s the best option, and should you consider a supplement?

Eat More Fish

While supplements have their place, your body absorbs nutrients best through food. For good health, try to eat fish at least twice a week. And while you may enjoy bass or crappie, you won’t find omega-3s there. Fatty, coldwater fish are your best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Great choices include salmon, herring, sardines, lake trout, anchovies, mackerel, and tuna.

Certain plant foods also contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 that’s converted to DHA and EPA by the body. You can get ALA from chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts, and canola oil.

You can also find omega-3s in unexpected places. An increasing number of food manufacturers are adding omega-3s to their products. Today, you can find eggs, milk, juice, yogurt, margarine, and cereal fortified with omega-3. This is great for those who aren’t into fish.

Fishy Benefits

Heart disease is the leading cause of death, and millions of people are trying to fight it. That’s one reason fish oil supplements are so popular. Omega-3 fatty acids may help support a healthy heart, mainly due to its anti-inflammatory effect. Fish oil supplements help to reduce high blood pressure, keep plaque from building up in the arteries, and prevent abnormal heart rhythms. With these benefits, the risk of a heart attack, stroke, or sudden cardiac death may be reduced, though studies differ on their findings.

The most widely accepted benefit of fish oil is its ability to lower high triglycerides. Calories not readily used by the body are stored in your fat cells as triglycerides. These are essentially fat in your blood. A healthy triglyceride reading is lower than 150 mg/dL. Levels over this are considered high. To bring your levels back to a safe range, your doctor may recommend a fish oil supplement.

The anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids may also benefit people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. Fish oil supplements have been found to relieve joint tenderness, reduce pain, and lessen morning stiffness that often accompanies this type of arthritis.

But the Smell!

Fish have a distinctive odor. Unfortunately, that smell is often associated with fish oil supplements, whether they come in capsule, pill, or liquid form. Some people who take a fish oil supplement experience a fishy aftertaste or fishy breath. Other possible side effects include nausea, an upset stomach, heartburn, loose stools, or a rash.

Despite these unpleasant side effects, it’s considered safe to take up to three grams of fish oil supplements each day. More than this may lead to bleeding or even stroke. Always talk with your doctor before taking a new supplement, especially since fish oil may interact with other drugs.
